Final Gear Ratio 4jb1-T mated to series Land Rover Axle

Nearing my project end (putting 2.8TD 4jb1-T into into land rover series III). I wander what is the final gear / final drive  would be?.

I have been discussing the final gear / final drive with my fellow mailing list and I got very good information from Mr. Hardiyanto (aka Rheemar).. this is what he said:
mas Vidi

pengen ngitung si 4JB1-T seberapa lebih kuat dari mesin LR standar ya he..he..

untuk ngitung final gear kendaraan 4x4 umumnya dengan menghitung 3 bagian:

- gear ratio gearbox

- gear ratio transfer-case

- gear ratio axle

biasanya kita mengambil ratio paling tinggi (alias paling boyot) utk tiap bagian, misalnya:

- gigi 4 dari gearbox (ratio 1:1)

- hi-ratio dari transfer case

karna kita di milis LR, saya ambil contoh pakai Series

- gigi 4 gearbox (ratio 1 : 1)

- hi-ratio transfer case (1 : 1.15)

- axle ratio (1 : 4.7), utk Rover dan Salisbury SIII

yang namanya final gear tinggal kalikan saja: 1 x 1.15 x 4.7 = 5.4

jadi final gear LR Series standar adalah 5.4

rheemar

Ok so using the formula that Mr Hardiyanto just told me, the following is the gear ratio calculation for the original series and the hybrid

The Original Land rover series III with axle ratio = 4.7:1

Main Gear BoxRatio G-boxFinal ratio High Transfer
1.15 : 1
Final ratio Low Transfer
2.35 : 1
41 : 15.4 : 111.05 : 1
31.5 : 18.1 : 116.56 : 1
22.22 : 112 : 124.51 : 1
13.68 : 119.89 : 140.64 : 1
Reverse4.02 : 121.73 : 144.40 :1

And this is the 4jb1T mated with rover axle = 4.7:1

Main Gear BoxRatio G-boxFinal ratio High Transfer
1 : 1
Final ratio Low Transfer
2.05 : 1
50.809 : 13.80 : 17.79 : 1
41 : 14.7 : 19.63 : 1
31.404 : 16.60 : 113.52 : 1
22.248 : 110.56 : 126.41 : 1
13.767 : 119.47 :137.31 :1
Reverse3.873 : 118.20 :137.31 : 1

Due to smaller ratio in the both transfer case and gear box of 4JB1-T, I will got smaller ratio in overall, only in the high first gear the ratio is similar, everything else is smaller, what it means? It means that 4JB1-T engine is good for cruising but land rover stock will perform better in "crawling". I hope that additional HP and torque from 4JB1T will make it up so hopefully (finger crossed) the crawling performance of the hybrid will still be better than stock one.

Comment please...

Cheers

Axle setup decided

Now after, asking around whether my axle set up is ok or not (which seems that everyone agree that it is not a good set up), I got few options to amended... so thank you to all who answer my questions on the forum and give comments on this blog.

So the options is as follows:

  1. Change the gearbox and T-case with the one who has right hand output (such as Taft, Isuzu elf, Land rover's and others)

  2. Set up the axle using CV joints

I think for the time being , I will try to use the second option as this will be the easiest and cheapest option.

But there are a lot to consider when choosing this option, relatively complex angle calculation need to be done but generally it would be like this:

image

as supposed to be like this when using conventional joint

image
You see the difference? if using CV joint, the angle of the axle has to be tilted up so it has 0 degree angle with the propeller shaft, the problem is: if you see the below picture, you will see that the space is very tight, the CV joint will take almost half of it... I do not know if it is possible but some says that it is possible...

Now I do not know where I can get the CV joint to handle that angle...

Axle sorted out.... sort of...

As you may aware that I have yet to sort out the rear axle because of the 4jb1-T output shaft is in the middle as supposed to the lower right for the original land rover engine. It is not so problematic with the longer wheel base though...

There are few options like changed the rear axle with Toy, Isu axle (prado, bighorn etc) however that will create another problem that I have to change the front axle ratio to match the rear axle. Not to mention that the width of the axle need to matched as well.

It is very fortunate that the garage owner where I swap the engine is very creative... he finally decide to modified the original rover axle by moving the gear to the back and in result the gear house now is on the left. You can see the difference in the following picture.

roveraxle.jpg axlelchanged.jpg

The left picture is the original that show the gearing house is in the right, while the other picture show the "doctored" one. However it make the distance between the axle and engine is closer and "deeper". I do not know if it is OK but I asked my garage to make a propeller shaft anyway so here are the picture.. please let me know if it is alright. I doubt it will work alright especially for offroad... any comments, suggestions are very appreciated.

Land Rover to support Orang Utan

orang-utan_baby.jpg

It is good to know that Land rover is not always commercially oriented, They just anounced that they are going to support orang utan project in Kalimantan or Borneo. Orang utan is Indonesian word for "junggle people" they are very gentle creature, like to have fun by swinging around the tree and almost extinct because of deforestation. Following is the excerpt, you can find the complete news in : here

Land Rover Supports King Of The Swingers ‘The Jungle VIP’

The Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation (BOS), which runs the world’s largest primate rescue project, is to be sponsored by Land Rover.

The announcement that Land Rover’s support will assist in the rescue and relocation of wild orangutans in Indonesian Borneo was made by TV presenter Nick Knowles at a VIP pre-screening of the BBC’s Saving Planet Earth which documents his visit to Borneo to see the work of BOS.

The sponsorship forms part of Land Rover’s sustainable development policy, which outlines the company’s commitment to developing the business responsibly and ensuring sound environmental practice for all Land Rover activities.

Coil testing

I fetch this article from this site :http://www.mymopar.com/coiltest.htm

=========================

This testing procedure is valid for just about any automotive coil. Using an ohmmeter, check the resistance between the side terminals of the coil. Do this with all of the wires to the coil disconnected. You should see 0.75 to 0.81 ohm of resistance. Then check the resistance between either side terminal and the center high tension terminal. The reading should be 10,000 to 11,000 ohms. Any significant deviation from these numbers would indicate that the coil is defective.

A Good rollcage for land rover

A roll cage is a cage that protect you when you rolling... this happen frequently in the off road event, A good roll cage usually expensive, but not all expensive rollcage is a good one. There are certain rules need to be followed when building a rollcage, a good material and an experience builder is the things that you need to consider.

Do not be a cheapskate when you build a rollcage for your land rover, it is your life, you do not wan to go home in body bag do you... :-). here is the example how the rollcage can protect the person iside the car. courtessy of : http://www.haggis-built.co.uk/
