Land Rover series I

After about a year owning land rovers, I start to realize that this car has gone trough numerous changes and ownership, it is really interesting to know what happen with this car. It is still not as heroic as "Pak Sudirman" my childhood hero, but very entertaining. anyway lets start with land rover series I first.

Land Rover Series I

The very first production of land rover after few prototype and pre-production model built. it was launched in 1948 as a stop-gap to keep Rover busy in post-war years, the Series I workhorse had aluminium bodywork because of steel rationing. The early production models can be identified by the headlights located behind the steel mesh radiator grille and the sidelights mounted on the bulkhead

Things you want to know about land rover 6 cylinder

Now that I have series land rover 6 cylinder, I take many pictures before I sell it again, due to the disagreement with the wife.. :-).

In general it is very similar look with its 4 cylinder series, you can't imediately see if it is having 6 cylinder without opening up the engine hood. This are few FAQ about land rover series 6 Cylinder, that I can answer, if you have other question, please do not hesitate to write it on comments:

Q: How to know that a series is having 6 cylinder without opening up the engine  hood?

A: you can see the exhaust pipe behind the front left tire. See below...

See the exhaust pipe
Q: Which engine is having high compression and which one is low compression

A: Look at the engine number,

  • 7.0:1 (low compression) start with 944

  • 7.8:1 (high Compression) start with 944.

Look for the high compression one. You do not need the low compression head now adays.

Q: What the engine looks like

A: Quite strange actually, it has intake valve overhead and exhaust valve on the side of the engine. Here you can see the engine room of 6 cylinder. The cylinder head is aluminum, but the cylinder block is cast iron

[caption id="attachment_194" align="alignnone" width="178" caption="Engine room"]engine room[/caption]

Q: Is the engine an good?

A: It is depend on what you are looking for in an engine. It definitely has more power and torque than 4 cylinder. It has a good pulling power great for trailer, and it has wide band of torque so you do ot need to change the gear often. It certainly run faster than 4 cyl, so you don't need to be a stumbling blok in the road. it is really fun to drive and the sound is very sweet too.

Q: And the bad are...?

A: It is quite thirsty, and being aluminum head, it will warp easily if it is overheated (just like current engine). Parts are more difficult to get but I still can easily find it here in some stores.

Any more questions? :-)

My new Land Rover

[caption id="" align="alignleft" width="270" caption="Land rover series III 6 Cylinder 2.6L"]Land rover series 6 Cylinder 2.6L[/caption]

I have quite few Landy series... they are : SC-HDTP, STW, SC-CNVS, LC-PU, LC-CNVS, and one SC-HDTP engine conversion (if you do not know what I am talking about, you probably go to the wrong website), so in all I have six land rover series already. I wander myself, why do I need many of them, so don't even ask... :-)

Surely missus is not happy about my collections, plus I do not have the place for all of them, so I "swear" to stop collecting another land rover a few months ago.

But... this week-end someone told me that he is selling his Land rover series 6 cylinder STW. At first I am not interested, but I give it a look anyway.

To my surprise, the truck is very-very pristine, the paint is still original, very minimal dent or scratch if any, the engine is still purring smoothly. in short, it is quite rare.. even if I have more money, I won't come across this type of landy easily, so I gave up... bought it ( afger hagling a bit) and I am now end up with 7 landys.. my God...

I am not regretting it tough... in fact I am very happy to have this one, but I need to let go some of my landy, otherwise missus will not let me in to the house.. :-)

Now about the engine, how different is she compare to 2.25? here is some spec:

6cyl, 2.6L

2.6L LR 6 cyl (7:1)67/90 @ 4500178/131 @ 1500
2.6 L LR 6 cyl (7.8:1)71/95 @ 4500181/134 @ 1750

4 Cyl, 2.25 L 4

LR 2.25L Petrol52/70 @ 4000163/120 @ 2000

You see the difference? Although 6 cyl generally is much thirstier than 4 cyl, but for big and heavy Station Wagon, I think there will be not much different due to the weight of the truck. 4cyl may actually consume more fuel.

So if you want to know more about his beast, you can download the review in here : www.landroverfaq.org/Reviews/FourWheelerMagFeb1967-LandRover.pdf but remember this review was done more than two decade a go...

I am now an amateur radio citizen

Yaesu Vx 6RI know it is there and I want it... Amateur radio... a special space (frequency) in the air that anyone can use it, no need to pay like we do in cell phone or commercial radio if we want to transmit something. Why I want it? it will be nice if you can talk to someone over wireless-ly when you are out of reach cell phone signa. This almost-always happen when you do offroading.

But the decision is not as easy as I thought... there are a lot of variables other than money that we need to decide.

  1. Single Band or dual?

  2. Rig (mobile) or Hand held (HT)

  3. Brands

  4. Price

  5. New vs Used etc etc...

Not knowing anything about Ham radio, I try to do search and read a countless article and review about Ham Radio and finally decide that my first ham radio is: a new, hand held (HT) ,dual band ,Yaesu vx 6R.

  • New : Because I do not know shit a bout electronic especially Ham radio, so this is a save bet, I want to have the HT at its prime. The wear in component can reduce the capabilities of the radio... so better buy a new one.

  • Hand held : This is very difficult decission, I want it a mobile because of bigger power (up to 75 watt) so I can talk further with other friends, but I read that the wattage is not the only factor (but yes it is one of the factor). With a good HT (5 watts) is good enough to reach 5 miles or more as long as there no obstacle. Adding a good external antenna will extend the reach of HT, furthermore, if we can reach a repeater, the reach will be a s good as 50 watts radi plus high antenna. With HT, you can bring it anywhere you want: hiking, biking etc... very handy..

  • Dual Band : Although there is single band with higher power at the cheaper price, I choose dual band so I can talk both in VHF or UHF (clearer but shorter distance). The only draw back for dual band is the price... it will always more expensive than single band transmitter.

  • Yaesu Vx-6R : before I lean toward I-com V85 because of its power (7 watts) but single band, but I learnt that Yaesu Vx-6R can transmit in most of the frequency. Although in Brochure only mentioned 144-148 (2 meters) and 220-225 (1,25 meters) and 430-450 (70cm) or three banders... mine can transmit wider frequency than those, including HF and 6 meters. Essentially with adding few more bucks I will have free range HT (it is confirm that it can transmit in 6 meters as well as HF frequency.

So now, I am a happy air citizen...

Helmet is required for topless car driving

landrover_smSay... you have a land rover like in the left picture and you want to drive it around the town.

By Indonesian law, it is required that you wear helmet.

This is the article for that:

5. DASAR PENGGUNAAN HELM

6. SANKSI TERHADAP PELANGGARAN TANPA MENGGUNAKAN HELM
- Pasal 61 ayat (3) Undang-Undang No. 14 Tahun 1992
Pidana Kurungan paling lama 1 (satu) bulan
Denda setinggi-tingginya Rp. 1.000.000,- ( Satu Juta Rpuiah )

The police basically said: " For any 4 wheel (or more) vehicle without "housing" (it means either hard or soft top), the driver and the passenger should wear a helmet, failing to do this will cause the person get maximum one month jail terms and maximum Rp. 1 million (US$ 100) fine.

Now have you ever see the police stopping this kind of car because they do not wear s4cab-2helmet? Never... right...? That's because they are too rich and probably have a lawyer that good enough to make the life of our police miserable. So no Police will stop this kind of car without having a risk dealing with lawyer.

But do not be afraid, because I never see police stopping the topless land rover series as well, they know and rightly so that the series land rover owner will have unpleasant  consequences too

  1. The driver or passenger will  have no money to bribe, and they will end up having a paper work to do
  2. They risk to get tetanus if they ever touch your series Land rover (land rover owner seems immune to tetanus)

So if you want to be a good citizen... please wear helmet, if you insist not to wear one... I do not think you will be in trouble.. :-)

Drive on...!
